PAVAKKAI PITLAI(BITTERGOURD)

Pavakkai is usually bitter, but in this dish, you wont feel the bitterness. It is cooked with dal and coconut. Delicious.

Main Ingredient : Pavakkai

Ingredients :

Pavakkai Chopped - 2 cups

Coconut - shredded - 1/2 cup

Thuvar dhal - 1 cup

Tamarind - 2 tbsp

Red chilli - 4 nos

Malli seed - 2 tbsp

Urad dal - 1 tbsp

Channa dhal - 2 tbsp

Black pepper - 1 tbsp

Jeera - 1 tsp

Turmeric - 1 tsp

Oil - 2 tbsp

Salt to taste

Seasoning - 1 tbsp

Curry leaves few

Preparation :

  • Sprinkle little salt in the chopped pavakkai. You have to cut pavakkai into small pieces, remove the seeds. Keep it for few mins
  • Pressure cook thuvar dal till soft.
  • In a pan add tsp of oil, and then the channa dal, jeera, chilli, malli seed, black pepper and saute. Remove from heat, after it is cooled you can grind with coconut. Make it a fine paste.
  • In the same pan, you can add tamarind paste, water and turmeric. Let it come to boil.
  • Now you can take the pavakkai and squeeze all the water and put inside the pan. When you take all the water, the bitterness will be reduced.
  • When it is cooked, you can add the ground paste to the pan.
  • Add the cooked dhal to it. Then the seasoning and salt.
Serve it hot with rice or chapathi.
